Fireworks Night: Nev's Safety Tips

We all love Fireworks and bonfires at this special time of year but our Nev has highlighted some of the dangers that can be encountered.... Please note: these tips are for entertainment purposes only - not to be taken seriously!!!!! ;)

Neville's Firework Night Safety Tips:

1) Always wear stout shoes. And a nice mac, in fawn.

2) Never use a flask to store rockets - you use those for tea, soups and most hot beverages. I like Horlicks...ooh!

3) Never light a firework with a cheap lighter, you'll be there for hours. Get a good one.

4) Remember to pack sandwiches.

5) Always check the site of a bonfire before lighting - there may be a pair of shoes of mine that I lost there.

6) Fireworks and alcohol don't mix - man up and stick to weak shandy.

7) Hot baked potatoes are nice, look out for those.

8) Get to bed straight after the firework display - remember 'those who dilly dally, often have the grumps' (ancient Chinese proverb possibly).

9) Wear thermal socks, nothing too fancy of course - think practical rather than fashionable.

10) Have fun of course! (In moderation).

Our Nev' has returned from a recent car boot tour of the UK. He managed to pick up some excellent DVD'S and is now offering us his unique thoughts as he reviews them!

Title: Trains Of Yesteryear.
Car Boot Fair: Swansea Baths.
''Nice one this to start us off...I liked the cover and the smell of plastic. The video itself plays nicely and there are plenty of BR era stock to keep me happy!'' 8/10

Title: Kent Coast.
Car Boot Fair: Bodmin, behind the bottle bank.
''Funny I should find this in Cornwall! This is a good one, as I live in Kent. So I have a personal affection for this beast. Nice Driver POV footage, commentary is a bit dull and boring - hence the full score! 10/10

Title: 100 Years Of British trains.
Car Boot Fair: Kings Lynn, Two Cocks Car Park.
''What's there not to like about this? A century or 100 years at least of steam! Have It! Lovely.'' 9/10

NEWS: More on Missing Images...

Message From Lobster - Mitch:

Well it does seem that WOP is not the only blog to be affected by images being deleted! Just to recap - you may see that some of the older images here on WOP have been removed and replaced with a black picture with '!' symbol.
It appears that upon after I joined up with Google+, all images I posted are deleted and not recoverable.

For those of you with an account with Blogger - be aware!!!

Videos are unaffected so far, this seems to only apply to images posted on Blogger.
We didn't realise that images for Blogger are hosted by Picasaweb, who in turn are connected to Google.

So the long and short of it is - there is no way to recover images prior to joining Google+, but image posts from now on will be okay. Also Babbington's image posts so far seem to be okay.

There appears to be a technical issue with jpegs on this website - we have trained expert chimps looking into this right now! There may be a bug with Google caches according to the forums. Videos, at this moment seem to be unaffected at least.

UPDATE! I think we've solved the problem with deleted jpegs on WOP. It seems upon joining Google+ archived photos such as the ones here on Blogger are deleted. It also seems there is no way to recover them! Aaargh! We certainly are not amused by this.
Never mind - new jpegs are not affected, just the ones posted prior to joining Google+.
So it seems, although we cannot get the old images back sadly, new posts will be fine :)

Another vintage find this week! The long running chat show from the 50's came to an abrupt end with this special interview with our very own furry artist Artbear. Hosted by Christmas Bear (Senior), this programme ran for an incredible 74 episodes interviewing the likes of Charles Laughton, Sir Laurence Olivier and even royalty - Martin Luther King.

Ahead of it's time, and with such a warm and witty host - this programme will go down in history as a landmark and pioneering piece of television.

However, five minutes with Artbear proved to be enough!

Well.....Christmas wouldn't be Christmas unless our Nev' has covered an eighties classic would it? It seems his recent musical success (relatively speaking) with Dizzee Donut and his Christmas single has left him wanting more. He decided to do a cover of Bonnie Tyler's ''Holding Out For A Hero''

We tried to point out that this is a song probably best sung from a females perspective given the lyrics and that, but he just chuckled ''I like it and that's all that matters really. I did this to honour the unsung heroes that need the recognition they sorely deserve. With my head on them because I look better.''

This was considered quite ground breaking in it's day for its depiction of harsh northern stereotypes. So let's travel back in time a bit and soak up the smoke filled snugs of the pubs and the corner shop gossiping as we take a look at this classic episode.

Christmas WOP: Q & A With N.C. and Dizzee Donut

We caught up with N.C (Neville Cheestring) and Dizzee Donut (real name unknown) after their recent chart success with their hit single 'WOP Groovez'. They were preparing for a T- Shirt signing in Oxford Street (Lipchester).

Our reporter posed the questions to the duo.....

Q: How did you get on when recording 'WOP Groovez'?

DD: Well it went fine but N.C's obsession with da studio toilet rolls made things well sad ya' know. That said, for a sad stylee - he did okay...considering this sort of sound isn't really his bag. What tunez are? Best not to lose da shut eye over dat innit.
N.C: Donut is right, I'm not really into this kind of music, or any really - but I thought this would be a good way to reach out to the youth. I like to reach out and touch 'em, you see.

Q: Neville, would you consider going to America for inspiration for the next single?

N.C: Is there going to be a follow up single then? Seriously, I don't know. We did okay with this one, I don't think we should push our luck. As my father said to me once ''Quit while you're alive, son'. I couldn't consider going abroad though - all that foreign food plays merry havoc with the you know what.
DD: I don't fink you'd go down too fly in da hood Nev!

Q: Dizzee, would you like to do another single with Neville?

DD: No. The guy is whack, man.

Q: What words of advice do you have for budding musicians out there who would like to be where you are?

N.C: Well, I think you should always eat your greens and wear a sensible pullover. Anything else is a bonus.
DD: You gotta reach into your soul and get da inspiration from your innermost feelings and emotions, then pour them out in your soundz. I grew up in the ghetto in Skitwick Ferrers, and I had to grow up fast. If you didn't have a gun or knife when you were 6, you'd be dead. I opted for a knife and I got shot. Retrospect is a gift. Bo!

Q: Finally boys, what are you working on now?
N.C: I am preparing my Christmas Story soon to be shown here on WOP, I'm getting quite tea towel set about it. I won't spoil anything but needless to say it'll be a story about Christmas.
DD: I am signing on next week. Whack....

Christmas WOP: At Home With Neville - Again!

Following on from our recent discovery of a vintage recording of 'At Home With Neville', we have unearthed another episode! This is somewhat more amazing, as this slice of life with Neville called 'A Date With Disappointment' stars our other WOP regulars, Art Bear and Kevin Ketley. Incredible...!
They all have aged so well, especially Bear it has to said.

In this one Neville agrees to meet Art Bear and Kevin in the pub, he seems estranged in these surroundings as he has only been in the pub once for some peanuts and a Babycham years ago! Events unfold as he meets Anna, a young girl from Latvia....... What will happen?

Christmas WOP: More Wrong Signs...

While I was travelling on the omnibus today, I happened to spot this rather bizarre example of wrong signage. Who to sack? The sign writer/ company who supplied this erroneous banner, or the business owners for not noticing it??!

Either way - this is another one to add to the pile.

Apologies for the quality of the image (as well as the spelling on the sign) the bus was just moving off and I only had my WOP 45t7 SLR camera on me. Incidentally there are plenty of these left in the warehouse - so if you're looking for a cheap stocking filler ;)

Christmas WOP: At Home With Neville!

It seems there is even more to our Nev than meets the bad eye - he starred in his very own radio series on WOP RADIO* back in 1959 ( I know that would make him older than he is - but try not to think about it too much, just go with it) called 'At Home With Neville'.

With characters like Mrs Thompson played by Patty EggGrinder and the vicar played by Edwin Frumps (uncredited because he physically assaulted the studio goldfish), we get a glimpse of 1950's suburban life with our Nev.
This was the series which gave rise to some of his famous catchphrases like 'It's bitter out!' and 'I've cut his leg off!'

In many ways this was a groundbreaking programme. Not our words - but Neville's.

We managed to track down this vintage episode called 'A Snowy Day' first aired December 2 1959, exactly 51 years ago!!

Doesn't he hide his age well? Really well actually.

Anyway, as I said, don't dwell - simply enjoy this classic radio gem!

*WOP RADIO became defunct in 1977 and was then merged with POOTSOUND.

Christmas is a time for fun, drinking your head off and over eating for sure - but also it's a time to think about those that are less fortunate...those that for Christmas, it's just another day of suffering.

That said, don't let it get you down too much. You have to enjoy it don't you?

Neville Cheestring decided to help children that can't afford simple things in life - by that he means trainers and decent shoes.
Yes, more and more children are living without any fashionable clogs, and Neville has decided to step in (pardon the pun).

Neville says ''I couldn't just sit there seeing all these children going about with naff trainers - I had to look away. But then I thought no! I will do something....!''

So WOP AID is born!

Artbear's Christmas Special 2010!

Christmas WOP: Nev's World Of Plastic

Our very own toothed buffoon heard that there was a Plastic Exhibition at the community centre in Riddingspoon Vale, so armed with a WOP Starter Camera and a fork - he went along to see what they had to show....

Nev was so impressed with the wealth of plastic tat on display, he noted in particular two of the exhibits.

''Look at this beauty! Plastic Man!!!! The ultimate superhero - imagine having the powers to bend yourself into the shape of a chair or something. She's in great condition, such a lovely cover. I'd love to get my hands on her and bend the pages tee hee!''

''I am not sure what these are, they look like some kind of rain hat. Perhaps an item of head wear for canaries in wet weather? It doesn't matter - they look nice and practical too!''

Nev is now getting quite tea towel set about an exhibition of eggcups coming in the New Year.

''You could say I am quite egg - happy about it. Excited. Egg - cited. Doesn't matter.''

Dreadful Behaviour!

We here at WOP humbly apologise, there hasn't been any posts since February! What can we say? 'Bananas'. Oh and 'hampton'.

In other words, we have been rather busy with....ahem...real life commitments. But rest assured, normal business will be resolved very soon.....

I heard that Nev is planning something but he isn't letting on. He simply said ''It's going to be...something''.

As for the rest of the posse? Well, I'm afraid disarray has set in! Kevin Ketley was sent off to Malaga to report on the Tortilla Flinging Championships but has not checked in. Des Silverfish is looking at opening a used car lot in Bending, and even the other half of the WOP squad Babbington has announced that he would like to join the Mongolian Circus and their travelling fragrant monkeys.

So it's up to Nev to hold things together with his string vest!

Oh dear....

Neville's Valentine!

Well, just as we wipe the snow of Christmas of our boots, another Valentine's Day is on the horizon.... Yes, it's that time of the year when love is in the air.

It's nature's way of cushioning the blow of tax returns, stock taking and seeing the poor state of your bank balance after the festive feasts and whatnot.

Neville loves Valentine's Day - it's a time when he can be with his Flossie, providing she lets him near the house of course.

So with the help of our Nev, we've come up with a special poem dedicated to lovers....

'Tis that wonderful time for loving, that moment of shy tenderness,

Nev wants to show his love to Flossie, of trains - he must confess.

But she is his other love, one which the tide will never drown,

He'd like to take her to dinner, at the station buffet at Stourbridge Town.

A pork pie snack and a Wagon Wheel, and maybe more than food,

'A ramble in the country?' Nev suggests, being rude.

Cupid fires his arrows at Flossie's elbow - he's missed by a mile!

But Neville picks up the arrow and carresses it for a while.

'Where will you stick that arrow Nev?' Flossie asked in fear,

Nev stuttered 'I need no magic, Flo - I've got you deep in here...'

He pointed to his chest, showing where dwells his heart,

But he forgot that he was holding Cupid's enchanted dart.

So off to hospital they hurriedly went, upon which Nev lost a lot of blood,

Ruined was his favourite anorak - the one with the detachable hood,

But a happy ending was to be, with Flossie by his bedside,

He heard a Class 270 pass, with joy he almost cried.

Nev's New Hobby For 2010: Water Hydrant Spotting.

As the title suggests, this is Neville's new craze - water hydrant spotting! He got into it during a countryside ramble over Christmas and decided to document the types of hydrants and locations across the country.

''To be fair, I've only seen these three, but I am on the look out for many more!'' The goof stuttered. ''I want to get a folio together of all the hydrants in the country - I think the black 'h' on the yellow plaque is a wonderful design and it makes me tingle''.

As ever Nev, you know what you're doing.......

I think World Of Poot fans would like to know when your first video for 2010 is going to be!

Merry Christmas Pooters! We hope you're enjoying the festive holiday and now ready to tuck into some mince pies with the WOP Dairy Custard*
Whilst there may be some of us that will wake up Christmas Morning to a blanket of snow, most of us look set to miss out on a White Christmas again this year (despite the cold weather lately!)
However, one thoughtul resident of Herne Bay in Kent has come up with an answer - a WOP Sno-blaster Machine (£670.00 from the WOP Winter Goods Dept) - so at least one part of Kent will see some snow!
